Youth Empowerment
Youth empowerment through social innovation and entrepreneurship has incredible potential to solve problems at a grassroots level if youth are given robust platforms to connect and act.
Currently, half of the world’s population is under the age of 30, with 90 percent of this age group living in emerging and developing economies and 50 percent unemployed or working and living in poverty. The aspirations and needs of young people, and their ability to meet their full potential, remain largely unmet due to stagnating economic growth and limited opportunities for advancement. Despite the odds being stacked against them, we know that when youth are empowered, development outcomes improve.
Youth Employability
Over 40% of the world’s young people are either unemployed or have a job but live in poverty. The quality and relevance of education are at the heart of youth employability.
Very often education is not adequately tailored to the needs of the labor market: young people do not find jobs and employers are not able to hire people with the skills they need. The changing economic landscape requires young people to become entrepreneurs that are able to take initiative and organize a team to get work done.
As young people become consumers, workers, and producers, it is crucial they understand money and markets that increasingly affect them. For example, decisions to spend, save or borrow money influence their ability to access services such as education or health care.
Entrepreneurship and Business Management Skills
Entrepreneurship programs give promising young entrepreneurs access to resources and skills providing the best chance for the success of their new businesses. Youth Restore Hope works closely with youth in general, but those who have entrepreneurship and business management skills.
We have designed special training for the youth to improve their business management and entrepreneurship skill. We believe youth is the only key in every community and we are willing to work with them.
The training delivers by a professional business coach and they are very qualified to conduct training and mentorship programs related to business management and entrepreneurship.
Life Skill for Success
Our work allows us the privilege of meeting a diverse range of young people. Some are on the move from conflict and natural disaster, some are seeking better opportunities in the bustling mega-cities of Somalia and others are youth activists taking to the streets to create a better future for the next generation.
The evidence points to an unmistakable learning and skills crisis – millions of children and young people are struggling to develop even the most basic skills they need. At the current rate of progress, these skills deficits will continue to persist, signaling the urgent need for accelerated and collective action.
Youth Activities and Events
Practical youth work activities are the heart of any youth group. These include:
- Short-term activities which require little planning and are a great way to encourage social interaction, such as games, arts and crafts.
- Longer term activities, projects and events which require more advance planning such as workshops (for example dancing, sports), trips, discos/music events, youth exchanges, and inter-club visits.
New volunteers bring with them their own skills and interests. They may be able to add to the range of activities run in the youth group and should be encouraged to do so.
Examples of youth work activities include:
- Arts and crafts – themed arts, cards and gifts, graffiti art, face painting, glass painting, hair braiding, mobiles, puppets, printing.
- The arts – drama, music, video, dance.
- Games – team games, non-competitive games, group games, team-building games, puzzles and quizzes.
- Sports – traditional sports, unusual sports, competitions.
- Cooking – pizza-making, pancakes, cake decorating, non-alcoholic cocktails.
- Issue based activities – drugs and alcohol, sex and sexuality, anti-racism, anti-bullying, environmental, global citizenship.
